Sheila's Progress

Saturday, October 21, 2006

I haven't posted anything for a couple of weeks, because medically things are quite quiet. They are still trying to stabilise me on Warfarin, but we're still not there yet. My blood got too thin about a week ago, nowhere near dangerous levels, but I woke up to a bloodshot eye so that worried me and I went straight in for a count. So it's lower than that now but not as low as they want it to be. We are close to exhausting all the dosage combinations though so I hope we are now close to stability by process of elimination :-)

Frank and I went to Dorset last weekend and I managed to do a 5 mile walk. We worked it so that there were rest stops and there was only one hill at the end and it had plenty of benches on it as it was on the coast so we stopped at everyone for a few minutes before moving on. So it's hills that still get the better of me, but on the flat I'm not too bad as long as I get the pace right, as I said before, and not go off too quickly. The walk was another little milestone for me and I think Frank was as pleased as I was, that I'd made it.

The house move is progressing, it's with solicitors at the moment, but we go and monitor build progress regularly (keep an eye on things). We need to de-junk again before the move, so that's the next thing on the "To Do List". Only problem is most of it's Frank's as he likes to hoard "in case it comes in handy". Familiar?:-)

Free Bus Pass

Not quite yet, but I am now a Pensioner. I retired on Friday 6th from work on the grounds of ill health. This is ideal for me, allows me to concentrate on my on-going health issues with a steady income coming in.

Yesterday was our first Wedding Anniversary, so we went back to the Hotel for lunch. They remembered us which was a nice touch and the food was lovely. Hard to believe a year has gone by already.

Warfarin Update

Nothing much is happening at the moment, I am going to the BRI every 2-3 days to have my blood checked. They haven't managed to establish a stable position yet, the aim is to maintain it (INR count) between 2 and 3 but I have had readings of 3.5 and 4.4 recently! This means I have to be careful not to cut myself as it might take a bit to stop the bleeding as my blood is thin. My last reading was 2.4 on Monday which is great, but will it stay level? Normally the nurses work to a defined protocol of blood count vs dosage but not everyone's the same so occasionally they have to make educated guesses to establish a stable count. We will see what happens with my count on Wednesday, I've given up trying to guess what it will be.
Frank and I have decided to move house, we are staying in Portishead but moving to the other side of the marina. Now we are both at home together, we need a bigger place again! The house won't be ready until late Spring, so we don't need to panic at the moment. We can use the time to have a clear out at this end. So it's quite exiting and something to look forward to.
